Airport pickup sounds simple; loads less than 10 minutes into getting your self-drive car empty on the first day. Before you add airport pickup, think through these six checks.
The pickup is the product
No landing queue, no shuttle, no alternate ride into the city — the car is ready and the trip starts now. That is the whole point of airport pickup on a self-drive rental. But the experience depends on six things most travellers forget to check.
One: where is the handover point? Is the pickup at the terminal, a parking lot, or a side road? Operators physically located near the airport — like storefronts in the Vasco da Gama area of Goa — keep pickup to minutes. Two: what is the pickup fee? Some waive it, some quote it separately. Confirm before booking.
Deposits, km limits and documents
Three: the deposit and how it is returned. A cash deposit is fine if the refund policy is clear in writing. Card blocks are common but find out how long the hold takes to release. Four: the km limit. Some airport-based operators rent per day with per-km extras; others include generous daily limits. Get the number stated before you book.
Five: documents. Standard expectation: a valid driving licence in hand, and the ID (Aadhaar/passport) most operators ask for. Six: photographs of the car and fuel level at handover. Take them yourself — stone chips and dents photographed at pickup are the simplest way to avoid disputes at return.
Making it easier than the taxi queue
The best airport-adjacent self-drive operators also confirm bookings over WhatsApp within minutes of the reservation — a good signal of how their timelines run. For a sense of how a modern booking flow feels, see the booking walkthrough page.
Whether you land in Goa or any other Indian city, checking pickup fees, deposits, licence requirements and km limits before you book saves every awkward conversation at the counter.
