Pricing is the fastest profit lever a rental operator holds. A structure for segmenting your fleet, timing your rates and reading the market signals.
Price beats luck: segment before you set numbers
Single-rate fleets lose money twice: the hatchback priced like the SUV goes unused on weekdays, while the SUV quietly under-prices its peak demand. Segment first — economy, mid-size, premium, and specialty (Thar-class, luxury) — then give each segment its own weekday and weekend rate. Per-car pricing in RentalOS supports exactly this through simple fields per vehicle.
Rough segment pattern for most Indian self-drive fleets: economy at ₹1,200-1,800/day, mid-size ₹1,800-2,500, SUV ₹2,500-3,500, premium/road-trip specials ₹3,500+. Set rates at the top of your range and hold them — discounting is easier to reverse than raising.
The three timings that matter
Peak-season pricing (+20-40% for December-Goa, Diwali, long weekends), weekend pricing (+10-15%), and last-minute pricing — price the calendar, not just the car. Operators who keep one flat rate all year fund peak-season demand losses with idle-season income they never price for.
Extra-km charges are pricing too. Include 150-200 km/day and charge ₹12-18 beyond — generous-sounding limits win repeat trust; unfair limits surface in Google reviews.
Signals your rate is wrong
Utilisation over 80% with steady demand is a sign you are under-priced — raise slowly, 10% at a time. Utilisation under 40% for six straight weeks means over-priced or over-fleeted — either bring the rate down for that model or reposition the car (better photos, sharper description, airport pickup availability). And remember rates differ by city and season: a Goa December rate and an Ahmedabad June rate should not be the same number.
Review pricing against real bookings monthly, not yearly. RentalOS dashboards make this a five-minute job with booking history per car. For more structure on the economics of the model, see the launch playbook post.
